Research Blog: Music Video
Hello my people! Today I will be referencing three music videos by The Beatles and analyzing them. The first song is A Hard Day's Night. In the music video there are several camera angles. The angles include Wide shots showing the entire band performing. As well as medium shots showing the members upper bodies. The music video also contains close ups, emphasizing the members expressions. For movement, it include shots that zoom in and out. A common shot used in the music video is reaction shots, capturing audience reactions to the performance. The video takes place on a stage in London while performing. The video was performed outside so the lighting was natural. As normally, The Beatles were wearing their classing stylish suits. There is only type of editing which are just cutaways. Since the music is being produced by guitars the sound is diegetic. There is obviously voice over as you can hear their voices while the shots change. And there is the ambient sound of the audience cheering and clapping along.
The next Beatles music video I will be talking about is Help. One angle being used for this song are eye level angles. Just like the last music video there also includes regular medium shots, medium long shots showing the members from the knees up, medium close ups, and close ups. The Beatles wore their classic suits and black sweatshirts in this music video. The music video took place in a random empty room with the only things inside being them and the umbrella prop Ringo Starr held. There was also snow falling from the roof causing the members to act surprised. The music video includes diegetic sounds from their guitars as well as non diegetic sounds that add along to the beat of the song. Obviously since it's a music video there is a voice over. Since The Beatles are old there isn't much editing so it's mainly cutaways.
The last Beatles song I will be discussing is Your Mother Should Know. This music video is one of the most ridiculously weird and funniest music videos I have ever seen. This song uses every single camera angle. An establishing shot when they transfer over to the bus. A bunch of wide, long, medium, and close up shots of the group and all the back up dancers. There is an aerial shot of them walking down a ramp with the dancers. And over the shoulder shots viewing the whole stage. This music video takes place in a huge studio, and mini scenes in a bus/car. Boy there are so many props and costumes. The Beatles were wearing white suits with a red flower in the chest pocket, except Paul was wearing a black flower. Then their costumes changed to some magical red wizard costume with wands, it was totally crazy. The male backup dancers were wearing a classic black wedding suit while the females were wearing poof dresses with different colors. There are no diegetic sounds as they don't play any instruments in the song. Any instruments heard are prerecorded and played while they goof around. There is parallel editing as the scenes change from them being magical goofy wizards to nicely dressed men in white suits signifying different messages. As always there are cutaways.
